Look Back at 2025

Jack of Black Phoenix
Word of warning right off the beginning: this is a personal log and retrospective so be wary of sombre and unhappy tone it might take. I will start by saying the quiet part out loud: 2025 has been the polar opposite of great year, I'll go as far as to say it was the worst one out of all 30 years of my life so far - and I do not use those word lightly. There was always this feeling in my bones, that year 2025 would somehow be significant one. I never knew in what way or how, but...

Blocktober 2025

Jack of Black Phoenix
Oh look it's October again, and that means it's the month of flooding social media with images of blocky grey level mockups! While it's been a very busy year for me (I might share more on that toward the end of December), much of it is yet to be shown to the public. Still, I've managed to publish one map back in July: Coyote for Team Fortress 2. Coyote is a rather small King of the Hill map which I cooked up on-and-off from roughly November 2024 all the way up to its release in July 2025. The idea behind...

The Cut Content of Battlefield V

Jack of Black Phoenix
Once upon a time, the ol' Jack was doing some work digging thorugh game files of various titles, ripping out the in-game music, mixing it into fan-made tracks and sharing them with the world. One such game was Battlefield V, and the work ol' Jack did on it has generated a bit of a following for him over the years, and so he was dubbed "The Unreleased Soundtrack Guy". But his work on sharing these mixes was but a part of a larger journey. The curiosity got best of him and he started digging around the game files for other...

The Fall of Autumn

Jack of Black Phoenix
Not really much to say today aside from making a note of the passing season of Autumn which is the one time of the year when I feel like I can breathe. Took some time in the woods out of town to clear my head and enjoy the golden setting of nature's greatest gift to human eyeballs. Till next year I suppose!

Cutting Room Floor: Trinity

Jack of Black Phoenix
Hi, today's post will be a little different as I wanted to document and showcase a piece of level design that was lost to time. Without further ado, let's get into it. The year was 2023, the game was Team Fortress 2 and the map was called koth_trinity. It was a small arena designed for King of the Hill game mode, inspired by classics such as the original Nuketown from Call of Duty: Black Ops, Doom Town from Indiana Jones and Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and to lesser extent my favourite map from TF2 - koth_harvest. The name was...

A Change of Scenery

November is upon us, and with that the two most polarizing months I've had in a long time finally came to an end. To backtrack a little bit, coming off of August there was a lot of stuff cooking in the proverbial pot, the culmination of which was going to be the publication of a number of projects which were in development for a couple of months. Starting off in early September I have launched this very site which was a big step since it was not only a significant upgrade from my previous homepage, but also an opportunity to...

New Beginnings

Hello and welcome! Today marks the launch of a new, sparkly homepage where you can find a bit about my work and personal interests. This blog is hopefully going to serve as an outlet to share thoughts about both the topics you can find more about around the website, aswell as more in-depth dives into the creative design process of various releases, and worst-case scenario - personal views and considerations. I invite you to go on this journey together as we discover the secrets of life, universe and... well, more likely that we'll find out just how bad I am...
